The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem "Navi" Pillay on October 9, citing her efforts to promote peace and international law. Born in Durban into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid, Pillay later served on South Africa's High Court. Her international judicial career included the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the committee's announcement noted her International Court of Justice work in the case concerning Myanmar.
