IOM Says Djibouti Shipwreck Toll Rises to 139, With 84 Missing

The International Organization for Migration said on October 11 that at least 139 migrants had died in a shipwreck off Djibouti, while 84 remained missing. The toll rose from 109 after another 30 bodies were recovered. The boat was carrying 305 people from Djibouti toward Yemen when it sank near Guehere, north of Obock, overnight on October 8–9; about 82 people survived. Djiboutian authorities are continuing search and recovery operations. IOM is assisting survivors at its Migrant Response Centre in Obock with healthcare, psychosocial support, food, shelter and protection services.
