De la Espriella Warns Against Violence Ahead of Colombia’s October 14 Protests

Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella warned against violence ahead of nationwide protests scheduled for October 14, while promising guarantees for peaceful demonstrators. In his October 12 evening address, he ordered authorities to coordinate with organizers and local officials on transport, prevention, emergency response and public protection. He said security forces must act legally, necessarily and proportionately, prioritizing life and distinguishing legitimate dissent from violent acts. The president also said the government would present a protest decree during the week, rejecting permanent road blockades and obstruction of ambulances or emergency services.
