Nigerian Military Retirees Block Pension Board Entrance in Abuja Over Payment Formula

Nigerian military retirees blocked the Military Pensions Board entrance in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, on October 13, placing canopies and chairs outside while armed soldiers prevented entry. Veterans Association of Nigeria coordinator Lt. Col. Innocent Azubike said the pension adjustment formula disadvantaged some retirees and failed to adequately reflect salary increases for serving personnel. The protest followed September demonstrations and Defence Minister Christopher Musa's promise of an October pension increase. In a statement on Monday, the board said revised pension payments and applicable arrears began on October 2, 2026, and that a wages commission delegation had examined its review and payment processes.
