Attorney General Asks High Court to Freeze Police Investigations Law

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara asked the High Court to freeze implementation of the law restructuring the Police Internal Investigations Department until petitions against it are decided. Her filing seeks to halt appointments to the selection committee, the choice of a department director and coordinator, establishment work and budget-setting. She argued that politically influenced appointment and dismissal procedures could intimidate police officers, investigators, prosecutors, Shin Bet personnel, lawyers and journalists, and create organizational chaos. The filing said some implementation steps are already advancing during the election period, including a director search whose application deadline was extended to August 2.
