Zanzibar Malaria Case Puts Ashdod Traveler in Intensive Care
An Israeli man, 25, was hospitalized in Assuta Ashdod's intensive-care unit after contracting malaria during a four-day workplace trip to Zanzibar. Reports citing Assuta Ashdod said he developed high fever, chills, tremors, muscle pain, severe weakness and jaundice about three weeks after returning to Israel; his condition was initially serious and then improved under intensive treatment, though doctors said he still needed medical supervision. Assuta physicians Dr. Ami Mayo and Prof. Tal Brosh said the case followed other recent Israeli malaria diagnoses after Zanzibar travel, and urged travelers to consult a travelers' clinic, use preventive treatment when indicated and tell doctors about recent travel if fever develops.
