Strong Earthquake Shakes Southern Peru, Injuring Two and Damaging Buildings

A strong earthquake struck Peru's southern Andes at 1 p.m. local time on August 20 and was felt across several regions and in Lima. Peru's Geophysical Institute measured magnitude 7.2 at a depth of 108 kilometers, while the U.S. Geological Survey measured magnitude 6.7 at a depth of 66 kilometers. Two people were injured while evacuating in Coracora, and authorities reported damage to 22 homes, six health centers and one school in Ayacucho and Cusco. Rockfalls occurred near Coracora, while the Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami threat.
