Guinea Landfill Collapse Kills at Least 30 as Search Continues

Heavy rain triggered the collapse of a towering mound of waste at the Dar Es Salam landfill in Conakry at about 2 a.m. on August 23, burying nearby homes and killing at least 30 people. Guinea's government initially reported 30 deaths, six serious injuries and 16 lighter injuries; a later update from the official Guinean Press Agency, carried by APS, put the provisional toll at 32 dead and 27 injured. Search and rescue continued, and authorities closed the site while arranging medical care and relocation for affected families. Officials said the landfill had been scheduled to close that same day and residents nearby had received evacuation notices.
