Nevada's Hawk Fire Forces 42,000 From Homes as Blaze Reaches Reno

Nevada's human-caused Hawk Fire grew beyond 23 square miles (about 60 square kilometers) after starting near Hawk Meadow Trail on August 22, destroying homes as shifting winds drove it toward northwest Reno. Authorities ordered about 42,000 residents to evacuate and told another 45,000 to be ready to leave. At least six people—three civilians and three first responders—were injured, and the fire remained uncontained on Sunday. Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and directed state agencies to support local responders through the Nevada Emergency Operations Center.
