Mozambique Opposition Leader Mondlane Notified to Face Supreme Court Trial

Mozambique opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane said the Supreme Court notified him that he will stand trial on five charges tied to the deadly 2024 post-election protests. Prosecutors accuse him of advocating crime, inciting collective disobedience, public instigation to commit a crime, instigating terrorism and inciting terrorism; he denies wrongdoing and says he campaigned for electoral truth. Reporting says a conviction could bring more than 20 years in prison. Mondlane said the trial could begin within two or three months, with the exact date to be set; the prosecution’s allegations about deaths, disruption and property damage have not been adjudicated.
