Indonesia Keeps Seven Airports Closed as Anak Krakatau Ash Persists

Indonesia kept seven airports in Java and Sumatra closed until 6 p.m. Monday as volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau continued to affect flight paths. The Transportation Ministry said Atung Bungsu Airport reopened at 9 a.m., while Soekarno-Hatta, Halim Perdanakusuma and five other airports remained shut. About 2,300 flights and 270,337 passengers had been affected since September 5, including cancellations, delays and diversions. Indonesia’s Geological Agency said the 25-hour continuous eruption had ended but Anak Krakatau remained at Level III, while the ministry reported ash at altitudes up to 15,000 and 50,000 feet.
