Australia Proposes Mandatory AI and Data Centre Standards

The Australian government has proposed mandatory national standards for large data centres and frontier AI training. Data-centre rules would cover power supply, energy costs, water use, project location, community engagement and workforce skills, while AI training would face safety, security, transparency and local-investment conditions. Industry Minister Tim Ayres said Australia could shape the technology’s future, and Assistant Minister Andrew Charlton said investment must proceed on Australia’s terms. The government plans to consult nationwide through October 9 and introduce legislation in early 2027.
