Fiji Constitution Bill Clears Second Reading, Moves to Public Consultation

Fiji's Parliament passed the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 at its second reading on October 2 and referred it to an 11-member special committee for public consultation. The committee has 30 days to receive submissions and report its findings; further parliamentary approval and a referendum remain necessary. The official electronic voting record lists 36 votes in favour and 5 against, while two reports from the sitting give the final tally as 38 in favour and 5 against. Both reports list 9 abstentions; the official record lists 3 members not voting, compared with 1 in those reports.
