Privacy Authority Orders Police Inquiry Into Mali and Liel Yahalomi Data Disclosures

Israel’s Privacy Protection Authority instructed police on Sunday to investigate the disclosure of footage and personal information about Mali and Liel Yahalomi after they were located in Argentina in August. Authority head Gilad Samama asked Police Commissioner Daniel Levy and the police’s internal privacy supervisor to examine how the material reached the media. The authority said reports raised suspicion that at least some information originated with police, without establishing that a leak had occurred. Police must examine compliance with their procedures and submit findings and systemic lessons on releasing personal information to the media.
