Súmate Calls for Independent Judicial and Electoral Nomination Committees in Venezuela

Súmate asked Venezuela’s National Dialogue Table on October 13 to ensure independent committees for selecting new Supreme Court and National Electoral Council authorities. The civic organization said committee members should represent different civil-society sectors, lack political or economic commitments, and demonstrate democratic convictions, public-service experience and knowledge of the institutions. It welcomed the start of institutional renewal but urged civil-society participation in committee formation and candidate selection, without political power controlling either process. Separately, the National Assembly said interviews of 127 applicants for the judicial nomination committee began Tuesday and would continue through October 16 before an eligible-name list goes to its plenary.
