Therefore, it reflects accumulations over twenty years and does not necessarily describe the current situation at Saudi universities. In recent years, many Saudi universities have tightened their rules on research, publication, and promotions, and introduced controls aimed at raising the quality of research. This does not mean that the problem is over; there is still a lot of work to do, but it is inaccurate to read the chart as though it were a picture of reality today. A paper’s retraction also does not always mean fraud or misconduct; it may sometimes be retracted because of errors discovered by the researchers themselves. The figure is important and deserves attention, but we need more recent data broken down by year to understand the current trend and measure the impact of the recent reforms. In general, things are moving, albeit slowly, in a better direction.
