TPLF Says It Is in “Full-Blown War” as Tigray Forces Shell Afar Town of Yallo

Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) vice president Amanuel Assefa said on Thursday that the movement was in a state of “full-blown war” with Ethiopia’s federal government, confirming that Tigrayan forces were fighting alongside local armed groups in the Afar and Amhara regions. A humanitarian source in Afar said the rebels launched heavy artillery attacks on Thursday while trying to take Yallo, a town near the Tigray border. Fighting was also reported around Weldiya in Amhara. The renewed fighting effectively shattered the peace pact that ended a two-year war in 2022.
