High Court Orders Karhi to Appoint Four Public Broadcaster Council Members Within a Week

A unanimous High Court panel headed by Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit on September 24 ordered Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi to appoint four search-committee candidates to the council of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, which runs Kan. The petitions, led by the Hatzlacha group, followed expiring terms that left the council without a quorum. Karhi rejected the candidates on June 8, after a May 12 partial ruling backed advancing their appointments and the appointments-review committee approved them; the justices said he gave no reasons justifying a departure from the recommendations. If he does not sign the appointment letters within a week, the appointments take effect by force of the ruling.
