Ruto and Dangote Break Ground on $16 Billion Lamu Oil Refinery

Kenyan President William Ruto and businessman Aliko Dangote joined regional leaders on September 30 to break ground on a planned $16 billion oil refinery in Mokowe, Lamu County. The Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery is designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day. Dangote promised commissioning within 40 months; Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also attended. The project faces unresolved land claims, with a Kenyan court requiring the disputed site's status quo to remain pending an October hearing.
