Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to expand Israel's naval capabilities during a visit to Ashdod Naval Base with Defense Minister Israel Katz on Sunday. Naval officials briefed them on maritime challenges and southern-sector operations, including patrol forces and landing craft. The two inspected defensive and offensive equipment at the base. Netanyahu described threats to Mediterranean waters, seaports and shipping, and said the navy needed additional submarines, vessels and other equipment. He stated his intention for Israel to become a leading power in surface and undersea warfare.
