Tel Aviv University Study Finds Grocery Basket Prices Rose Nearly 20% in Four Years

A Tel Aviv University study reported on October 11 found that a fixed grocery basket rose 19.6% in neighborhood stores over four years, compared with 4.3% in the preceding four years. Professor Itay Ater and doctoral researcher Adi Omer examined 80 food and cleaning products across about 700 stores using Pricez data. They compared September 2022 through August 2026 with September 2018 through August 2022. The basket rose 19% online and 14.5% at discount stores in the later period, versus 4.1% and 2.8% previously. The researchers argue that reduced public and government attention helped enable the increases.
