Mbalula Calls for Review of DA’s Role in South Africa’s Unity Government

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula called on October 15 for a review of the Democratic Alliance’s participation in South Africa’s Government of National Unity. His remarks followed a Constitutional Court ruling restoring 181 ANC candidates in six municipalities for the November 4 local elections. The ANC had uploaded nomination information and paid deposits but failed to finalize submission through the electoral commission’s online system. Mbalula questioned whether coalition partners were following their statement of intent and cited other potential parliamentary partners. DA Federal Council chairperson Ashor Sarupen said the party respected the ruling while questioning its precedent for electoral deadlines.

Difference in reporting

Sources differ on the court case’s status: IOL describes judgment as reserved, while Mail & Guardian and Daily Maverick report that the ANC’s appeal succeeded. All three report Mbalula’s call to review the DA’s participation in the unity government.
