Two ANC Members Killed During Campaigning in Umgababa

Two African National Congress members, a man and a woman, were killed during a door-to-door election campaign in Umgababa, south of Durban, on Thursday afternoon. Police said gunmen in a white Isuzu pickup approached the campaigners and their bodyguards from behind and opened fire with rifles and pistols. Officers opened two murder and three attempted-murder counts. Police said the motive was unknown and political intolerance had not been ruled out. The ANC said it would review security for campaign volunteers.

Difference in reporting

Sources agree that two ANC members were killed during campaigning in Umgababa, but injury reports differ: EWN reports three people injured, SABC reports two wounded volunteers, and the police account reproduced by eNCA describes one woman injured while fleeing and two bodyguards not yet located. The motive remained unknown.
