New Zealand High Court Rejects Interim Injunction Against PNG Chiefs Name

Justice Karen Grau declined New Zealand Rugby's application for an interim injunction against use of the PNG Chiefs name at Wellington High Court on Friday. NZR had sought to stop use of the name in New Zealand while its trademark dispute with the incoming rugby league franchise remained unresolved. The ruling clears the way for a jersey and branding launch scheduled for October 21 in Port Moresby; the team is due to enter the NRL in 2028. NZR argues the name risks confusion with its Chiefs Super Rugby side. The decision concerns temporary relief and does not settle the underlying trademark dispute.
