Macron Orders Review of Riot Response and Promises Aid to French Businesses

French President Emmanuel Macron called for a review of intelligence gathering and preparations after violence across French cities on October 17. In an October 18 national address, he said the prime minister would chair a crisis cell the next day to mobilize assistance for affected shopkeepers, artisans and other businesses. Prefects would work with mayors on protective measures for cities, public buildings and shops, including banning some gatherings where necessary. Macron distinguished looters from demonstrators expressing legitimate concerns about living costs and fuel prices, and announced consultations with students, teachers, employers, unions, local authorities and parliamentarians during the coming days.
