New Zealand Labour Promises Review of Hospital Beds and Emergency Waits

New Zealand Labour leader Chris Hipkins and health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall have pledged an immediate review of hospital beds and emergency-department waits if the party enters government. The report would identify beds that could open with appropriate staffing and examine deaths and safety issues linked to long waits. Labour also promises to address staffing and discharge bottlenecks, fund teams helping older people recover at home and train more extended-care paramedics. Its plan includes jobs for every eligible New Zealand-trained graduate nurse, around 2,400 graduates annually, with roles available from 2027.
