UK Announces New Appeal Protections for Private Parking Charges

The UK government has announced new appeal protections under a private parking code covering England, Scotland and Wales. Drivers would have five minutes to decide whether to park and ten minutes to leave after a parking session. Qualifying emergencies, breakdowns and faulty machines would lead to charges being cancelled on appeal, while minor errors such as an incorrect registration or forgotten permit would carry a maximum £20 charge on appeal. The general maximum charge would remain £100, and noncompliant operators could lose access to DVLA data. Parliament will scrutinise the code before ministers bring it into force.
