AFP and ASIO Set Wednesday Safety Briefings for MPs After Haines Attack

The Australian Federal Police and ASIO will give federal politicians safety briefings on Wednesday following the attack on independent MP Helen Haines. An AFP spokesperson confirmed further party-aligned sessions were scheduled, while Kooyong MP Monique Ryan said politicians wanted to remain accessible members of their communities. AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett said the force recorded 1,067 reports of harassing, nuisance, offensive and threatening behaviour involving high officeholders, parliamentarians, electorate offices and protected establishments in 2025–26, compared with 951 in 2024–25. The AFP said not every report reaches the threshold for a criminal offence.
