Alberta Voters Back Remaining in Canada as Unofficial Count Gives Unity Side 76%

Alberta voters backed remaining in Canada in an October 19 provincial referendum, with unofficial results giving that option about 76% of valid votes on the question. Elections Alberta’s dashboard listed 1,163,359 votes to remain and 366,639 to start the constitutional process for a later binding separation referendum. The referendum ballot did not itself authorize the province to leave Canada, and counting remained underway. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the initial outcome on October 20, saying, “Above all, Albertans chose Canada.”
