Chile’s Senate Clears Bill to Speed Administrative Expulsions of Foreign Nationals

Chile’s Senate approved a joint committee report on October 20 with 37 votes in favor and one abstention, clearing a migration bill for promulgation after prior approval by the Chamber of Deputies. The reform to Law 21.325 raises the minimum reentry ban after administrative expulsion from three to five years and strengthens biometric records. It allows the investigative police to submit a written request for judicial authorization to enter a dwelling solely to apprehend someone with a final, enforceable expulsion order. Senators also warned that implementation requires funding, police capacity and international coordination.
