Helen Haines Has Lost Both Legs After Alleged Car Attack, Husband Says

Australian independent MP Helen Haines has had both legs amputated following Monday's alleged vehicle attack in Wangaratta, her husband Phil said on Wednesday. Speaking outside Melbourne's Alfred hospital, he said she was alive and stable but faced a long recovery. Her left leg was amputated on Monday, and surgeons were unable to save her right leg. Haines, 65, represents the federal electorate of Indi. Police describe the vehicle strike outside an office on Murphy Street as targeted and have charged a 43-year-old Tarrawingee man with three offences.
