UAE Nominates Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General

The UAE formally nominated Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh to become the next United Nations secretary-general on Wednesday. President Sheikh Mohamed submitted a letter to the UN Security Council highlighting her UN experience and record of constructive work. Nusseibeh became the UAE's ambassador to the UN in 2013 and left the role in mid-2024 to become Minister of State; she also led its delegation during its recent two-year Security Council membership. If selected, she would be the first woman to hold the post, succeeding António Guterres, whose second and final term ends in 2026.
