Barclays Outlines About 5,000 Job Cuts in AI Efficiency Drive

Barclays said on October 22 that structural cost actions taken in 2026 are expected to involve about 5,000 full-time employee reductions, approximately 5% of its workforce. The reductions remain subject to collective and individual consultation where required. The London-headquartered bank linked its organisational simplification and technology changes to efficiency driven by artificial intelligence, including fewer developers as employees become more productive. It reported £201 million of structural cost actions in the third quarter and expects more than £1.1 billion in gross efficiency savings in 2027.
