It says, ‘The Greeks are withdrawing, the local Greeks will burn the city, you must get here immediately.’ The cauldrons are immediately emptied, the cavalrymen leap onto their horses and set off in the direction of İzmir and Menemen. As morning is approaching, they arrive more or less in the vicinity of Alsancak. On the morning of September 9, one of the units under the command of Captain Şerafettin Bey launches an attack from the area we now call Hilal and Alsancak. As they advance at a gallop, the local Greeks, who have set an ambush behind some rubble, suddenly open fire in a way they never expected. Three of them fall as martyrs there. But Captain Şerafettin Bey’s horsemen enter the city on the morning of September 9. At 10:30 a.m., Captain Şerafettin Bey personally takes down the Greek flag hanging from the balcony of the Government House in Konak. He raises the Turkish flag. And İzmir becomes Turkish.
