In the face of the massacres in Gaza and the deaths of civilians, children, and women; in the face of Palestinians being driven from their lands in the West Bank, the expansion of settlements, and annexation policies being advanced step by step, Europe unfortunately either remained silent for a long time or contented itself with feeble statements. Turkey, however, has spoken openly and clearly from the very beginning. In the context of humanity’s common values, it has always cried out firmly, without restriction, at all times and in every setting: “Right is right, wrong is wrong”: Oppression is oppression, no matter who commits it. The identity of the innocent does not change their right. International law cannot be applied one way to the powerful and another way to the weak. With regard specifically to Palestine and Gaza, I would like to emphasize that Spain’s strong voice, which it has been raising in Europe for a long time, is especially valuable in this respect. It is important now that Britain, France, Spain, and other European countries show the will to take concrete measures against Israel’s settlement policies in the West Bank. Indeed, twelve countries, emphasizing that the settlements violate international law, have agreed on commercial restrictions on settlement goods at the national or European level. Although this stance has come late, it is valuable. Because the issue is no longer merely the Palestine issue. The issue is whether the international legal order built after the suffering of the Second World War, the devastation of colonialism, and the great tragedies of human history will truly apply to everyone. The issue is whether a standard that changes according to geography, religion, identity, and political interests when “human rights” are invoked will be accepted. The issue is whether United Nations resolutions, international law, and human rights will remain only on paper or acquire real enforcement power. If Europe is finally beginning to see these things today, that should be welcomed. But now it is time to move from words to action. Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank must be stopped; the forced displacement of Palestinians, the de facto annexation of their lands, and the elimination of the two-state solution must not be allowed. The joint statement also clearly expressed the rejection of settlement expansion and forced displacement. The truth Turkey has been stating for years has now entered Europe’s agenda as well: Justice is not a favor bestowed by the powerful. Human rights are not a selective privilege. There must be no further delay in stopping the bloodshed in Palestine, rebuilding Gaza, ending the occupation and settlement policy in the West Bank, and establishing an independent, sovereign, and viable Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. This voice, rising even if late, is important. But from now on, history will look less at who said what than at who did what. Justice for Palestine; a test for humanity as well.
