IDF Expands Combat Forces Despite 12,000-Soldier Shortage

The IDF is expanding its regular and reserve combat structure across the Gaza, northern, Syrian and eastern frontiers as it confronts a shortage of about 12,000 soldiers, including 7,500 combat troops. The current August induction cycle is forming one additional Golani battalion and one additional Nahal battalion. The reserve pool has grown by about 36%, with more than 100,000 people returned through canceled exemptions, volunteering, returning service and call-up orders, although not all are combat troops. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has called for more battalions and brigades to defend Israel and defeat its enemies.
