Uganda’s NARO Begins Multiplying Four New Irish Potato Varieties

Uganda's National Agricultural Research Organisation has begun harvesting seed of NAROPOT 7, 8, 9 and 10 at KAZARDI in southwestern Uganda. NARO says NAROPOT 7 matures in 90–100 days, while NAROPOT 9 has a potential yield of 31.4 tonnes per hectare. NAROPOT 8 and 10 have processing qualities suited to crisps, chips and other industrial products. The institute plans distribution to the Mount Elgon, Rwenzori and Zombo production zones. KAZARDI was selected for a hub designed to produce up to one million plantlets annually, with construction expected this quarter.
