Cohen Sets December Decision on 1-2 GW Data-Center Power Allocation

Energy Minister Eli Cohen said Israel expects initially to approve an additional 1 to 2 GW of electricity capacity for data centers after developers sought about 25 GW. Speaking at the Energy and Economy Conference, he said data centers currently use a little more than 1 GW and that a share of up to 20% of national electricity consumption would be reasonable. Cohen said the Electricity Authority plans to publish allocation criteria in October, complete a hearing in November and reach decisions in December. He said the initial limit is intended to protect natural-gas reserves while officials assess further exploration and a planned renewable-energy hub in the Negev.
