Holocaust Survivor Eva Umlauf Says She Is Appalled by AfD’s German State Victory

Holocaust survivor Eva Umlauf said she was appalled and saddened by the AfD’s victory in Saxony-Anhalt’s state election, warning minorities and foreigners have reason to fear. Umlauf, a Slovak-born pediatrician and psychotherapist in Munich, was two when she and her mother were liberated from Auschwitz in January 1945 and now visits schools to teach about the Holocaust. She serves as president of the International Auschwitz Committee. The AfD won Sunday’s vote but fell short of governing alone; Saxony-Anhalt’s domestic-security office classifies its state branch as right-wing extremist, a designation the party disputes while denying antisemitism.
