Kushner Says Hamas Weapons Removal Could Begin Within 30 Days After Netanyahu Talks

Courtroom-sketch editorial illustration of an on-camera interview in Tel Aviv: a dark-haired man in a navy suit, white shirt and burgundy tie stands at the centre of the frame from the chest up, his mouth open mid-sentence as he answers an off-camera interviewer, a rough pale stone garden wall and a dense screen of olive-green foliage rising behind him, a potted palm in a terracotta pot at the right edge and sunlit paving beyond, all drawn in chalk and pastel strokes on warm ochre newsprint.

U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner said Hamas could begin removing weapons within about 30 days and fill in tunnels within 60 to 90 days, after nearly four hours of talks in Tel Aviv with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said Gaza will not be rebuilt until demilitarization occurs and that Washington will not restrict Israel's right to strike imminent threats. Kushner said Hamas leaders he met in Egypt a day earlier said the right things, but the group is hard to trust after its atrocities. If Hamas does not perform, he said, Israel would have far more American support to finish the job. He added that Netanyahu's concerns were addressed.
