NYPD Says Jews Were 55% of NYC Hate-Crime Targets

Mamdani Tisch NYPD

The NYPD's July 2 first-half 2026 crime release said confirmed hate crimes rose 7.7% year to date, 322 versus 299, and that 55.3% of confirmed hate crimes in the first six months were anti-Jewish, even though Jewish New Yorkers are about 10% of the city. The department counted 178 anti-Jewish confirmed hate crimes, up 2.3% from 174 in 2025. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Jessica Tisch spoke at the briefing. New York's broader crime declines are welcome, but Jewish safety cannot be treated as a footnote. Diaspora communities deserve visible protection against antisemitic and anti-Israel violence.
