U.S. House Panels Probe New Israel Fund Tax Status
U.S. House Judiciary and Ways and Means leaders opened a probe of the New Israel Fund's tax-exempt status, alleging the U.S.-registered charity may have funded political campaign activity around Israel's 2019 election. Jim Jordan and Jason Smith said the inquiry examines whether grants to groups active against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu violated restrictions on 501(c)(3) electioneering. The committee letter cited $356,000 to Zazim and $95,000 to Adalah among the allegations, while noting the fund has denied electioneering claims in past disputes. The case places foreign nonprofit money, Israeli campaign integrity and U.S. tax oversight in the same election-year fight.
