Lapid Says Court Defiance Could Enable Election Delay

Israel constitutional crisis

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid used a same-hour Yesh Atid faction statement to tie the government's High Court defiance to election integrity, saying the cabinet wants to reach the campaign without an effective court. He warned that without judicial guardrails, a government could use a security event to delay elections, and said Justice Noam Sohlberg is being cast as a new enemy because he chairs the Central Elections Committee. Sohlberg himself recently described emergency election postponement as possible only under strict, temporary, transparent and last-resort conditions. Israel needs hard political argument before October's vote, but it also needs courts and election officials respected enough to keep the ballot trusted.
