U.S. Commander Warns Destroyer Shortage Could Limit Israel’s Defense

Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, head of U.S. European Command, sent the Pentagon a written warning that without another Navy destroyer he could be forced to prioritize defense of the U.S. homeland over Israel, according to officials familiar with the message. The command coordinates Mediterranean operations in which American destroyers intercept Iranian and Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at Israel. Two of its five Rota-based destroyers were in the Mediterranean on Friday, while maintenance demands have accumulated during the Iran war. The Pentagon declined to comment, and European Command did not respond.
