IDF Locates Shlomo Haimson's Grave in Haifa After Nearly 78 Years

An IDF Missing Persons Branch and Military Rabbinate investigation has identified the Haifa grave of Shlomo Haimson, a Haganah member killed while escaping the British detention camp at Karaolos, Cyprus, in September 1948. His remains were among 163 people brought to Israel in Operation Margo in 1970, but most were buried unidentified. A special team formed in 2023 examined archives, testimony, photographs and archaeological surveys before the Manpower Directorate approved its conclusion. Haimson's family in Brazil was notified, and a military and state ceremony will add a named marker to his grave.
