Egypt Urges Iran to Restore June U.S. Pact and Protect Gulf Shipping

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty urged Iran to restore implementation of the June 18 U.S.-Iran memorandum during an August 22 call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The ministers discussed resuming diplomacy through the Oman-Iran negotiating track and reaching a comprehensive, sustainable agreement addressing the parties’ concerns. Abdelatty called for intensified diplomatic action, peaceful understandings and freedom of international navigation. He also stressed respect for Gulf states’ security and stability, while Araghchi outlined his assessment of current developments and obstacles facing the negotiations.
