Magnitude 5.9 Quake in Eastern Japan Injures Dozens Across the Tokyo Region

A preliminary magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at 2:00 a.m. local time, 68 kilometers below the surface, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, issuing an Earthquake Early Warning and reporting no tsunami risk. Shaking reached lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale, which peaks at 7, in Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba and Tokyo's Adachi Ward. In a provisional count, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported 22 injuries across four prefectures, one of them serious, plus 15 light injuries in Tokyo and one partially damaged home in Saitama.
