Niger Says Forces Contained Soldiers’ Revolt in Niamey

Niger’s Defense Ministry said security forces contained a revolt by soldiers at Base 101 in Niamey and progressively regained control of affected sites. The ministry said the group tried to detain fellow soldiers inside the barracks around 00:20 during the night of August 28 to 29, then fired on sensitive sites in the capital. Its statement was read on national television and published by Niger’s official press agency late Saturday morning. Authorities asked residents to remain calm and go about their normal activities; the verified statement gave no casualty figure or motive.
