Smotrich Orders Fuel-Excise Cut Preparations as Gasoline Rise Looms

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich instructed ministry officials to prepare an immediate reduction in gasoline excise to offset the price increase taking effect September 1. Officials are still discussing the size, implementation mechanism and financing, and no order has been signed. The maximum self-service price for 95-octane gasoline is due to rise 16 agorot to NIS 8.25 per liter. Treasury officials oppose the step, while the ministry said election-period legal approval remains under review. Smotrich intends to sign an order promptly so a reduction could take effect within days.
