Magnitude 5.2 Quake Shakes Chile’s Atacama and Coquimbo Regions

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck 24 kilometers northwest of La Serena at 06:04 UTC, according to Chile’s National Seismological Center. The quake originated 68 kilometers deep and was felt across the Atacama and Coquimbo regions, reaching Mercalli intensity VI in La Serena and V in Coquimbo, La Higuera, Vicuña and Ovalle. Chile’s disaster agency said the national response system was evaluating possible effects on people, basic services and infrastructure. The Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service concluded the quake did not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami on Chile’s coast. The official notices did not report casualties or confirmed damage.
